Sinossi

If Seven Churches wasn’t the first genuine death metal album, there’s really only one other candidate: Death‘s debut album Scream Bloody Gore. But the follow-up Leprosy is a landmark in its own right. It was the first death metal album recorded at Tampa’s Morrisound Studios, which soon became the center of the genre. Musically and technically, it’s a sharp improvement on its predecessor, since bandleader Chuck Schuldiner hired three-quarters of underground legends Massacre as his new backing lineup.

Schuldiner’s growing ambition is apparent; already his lyrics were shifting away from movie tropes and into real-life horrors, while the compositions are a terrifying blend of chops and brutality. Of course, Death’s entire catalog is essential, especially the jaw-dropping ’90s-era progressive phase. But for the pure old-school sound, it doesn’t get any better than Leprosy.
