Gulliver's Travels

The series of stage exercises that has been “coordinated” by Silviu Purcărete represents a new approach to Swift’s classic novel, in which fantasy mixes with strong political satire.
The production, which was created by Purcărete to go with “Voices from the Merry Cemetery” (a piece of music by Irish composer Shaun Davey), reflects on our era from social and cultural perspectives, addressing such topics as dreams, travel, persecution, emigration, and belonging. It includes rousing and even disturbing scenes and strong visual effects. Purcărete was awarded the Herald Angel prize in 2012 in Edinburgh for his production of Gulliver’s Travels.
Gulliver’s Travels is a joint production of the Radu Stanca National Theater in Sibiu and the Edinburgh theater festival, with funding from the Romanian National Cultural Foundation. It was performed five times in Edinburgh and was also performed in 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad in London (held in conjunction with the 2012 Summer Olympics). In 2013, it won the prize for best production from UNITER (Theater Union of Romania). The company has taken the production on tour in Russia, Poland, Georgia, and, in October 2015, Japan.
